Yen for learning at Yujin Gakuen

EUGENE, Ore. - Students at Yujin Gakuen Japanese Immersion School were given a unique lesson in business management Wednesday.

In an effort to help them better understand global currency, they sold hand-made items to each other in student-hosted stores.

Items sold in English classrooms were purchased with American dollars, but anything sold in the Japanese classrooms had to be purchased with Yen.

Students say the exercise was a fun way to learn about currency exchange.

"Well, I learned Japanese. I learned how to speak Japanese, and, well, it helps us learn about money," said second grader Clara Brurbo.

Yujin Gakuen was the first public immersion school in the nation when it opened in 1988.

Students spend half of their day learning in English, and the other half learning in Japanese.
