Deadline to file for Eugene City Council, EWEB board coming up

The deadline to file to run for Eugene City Council and two Eugene Water and Electric Board seats is Thursday, and so far only three of the six races on the May 18 primary ballot have drawn more than one candidate, according to the city recorder's office.

Candidates first file a prospective petition, then circulate the petition to gather 25 signatures from registered voters in the ward.

Candidates have until March 4 to complete their filing and petition for city office, according to the Eugene city recorder's Web site.

The Oregon Secretary of State and Lane County Elections indicate candidates for state and county office have until March 9 to file for the primary election.

The May 18 ballot will also ask Lane County voters to choose County Commissioners and decide on a local option tax that would support 4-H and the Lane County Extension Service.

And in the headline race, Oregon Republicans and Democrats will select their parties' candidates for governor of Oregon.

Voters have up until 21 days prior to the election to register to vote or change their voter registration.

State: Vapors from contaminated groundwater don't reach air inside Trainsong homes

Press release

Oregon Public Health officials have determined that the indoor air quality of homes in the Northwest Eugene Trainsong neighborhood is not affected by vapors released through nearby contaminated groundwater, according to a report released today.

State officials began studying the potential for indoor air contamination in 2006. Union Pacific Railroad operations that began more than 100 years ago  contaminated the groundwater with volatile organic chemicals.  Officials from Oregon Public Health and the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) were concerned that these chemicals might be moving into the indoor air of homes located near the rail yard.

KVAL Community Profile: Santa Clara

By Tom Adams KVAL News

EUGENE, Ore. - The new Filbert Meadows Park is just off River Road, bordered by prime farmland and a large filbert orchard.

The park helps illustrate a hot topic in the Santa Clara neighborhood: future development.

Look around Santa Clara, and you'll see freshly plowed fields that back up to suburban backyards, or a creek leaves a city park and meanders through farmland.

You might call Santa Clara one of Eugene's hybrid communities: part urban, part rural.

Community leaders said the question remains: How to you provide for growth and still keep Santa Clara as Santa Clara?
